Abstract

A security door assembly comprising a panel (1) having inner and outer sides, at least two fastening members (4) fastened to extend from the inner side of the panel, the fastening members presenting free edges (5) facing in the same direction and mounting means comprising at least two first mounting members (7) and at least two second mounting members (6), the second mounting members each being so interconnected to a first mounting member that an entrance surround of a building can be clamped between the first and second mounting members, the second mounting members having a free edge (10) which can interengage with that of an associated fastening member secured to the inside of the panel, the second mounting members and the fastening members being hingedly interconnected by double pivot hinges (11, 12) which permit the panel to move in a direction within its main plane normal to the free edges of the fastening members secured to the inside of the panel, whereby, when assembled and fitted, the panel can be moved between a first position where the panel can be swung open and closed and a second position where the closed panel is prevented from being swung open by said interengagement of said free edges and the panel carrying locking means (14,17) operable from outside the panel for retaining the panel in the second position against unauthorised entry. <IMAGE>

Description

SECURITY DOOR The present invention relates to a security door assembly for use in protecting doors and windows of temporarily unoccupied premises.
The problem often arises with temporarily unoccupied premises of vandalism and various attempts have been made to reduce this problem by boarding up doors and windows either with wood or with reinforced panels of one sort or another. Because such boarding up involves securing from the outside it is readily dismountable to give access to the interior.
It has recently been proposed to provide a security door assembly comprising a door surround structure defining a door opening in which is hingedly mounted a door panel. On its rear face, the door surround structure is provided with clamping plates and bolts for securing the door surround structure to and overlapping the outside edges of an entrance opening. The door panel is secured in its closed position relative to the door surround structure by an elaborate bolt arrangement which is lockable and unlockable from the outside.
However, gaps are left between the door surround structure and the door panel into which screwdrivers, chisels or crowbars can be inserted by vandals.
It is now proposed, according to the present invention, to provide a security door assembly comprising a panel having inner and outer sides, at least two fastening members fastened to extend from the inner side of the panel, the fastening members presenting free edges facing in the same direction and mounting means comprising at least two first mounting members and at least two second mounting members, the second mounting members each being so interconnected to a first mounting member than an entrance surround of a building can be clamped between the first and second mounting members, the second mounting members having a free edge which can interengage with that of an associated fastening member secured to the inside of the panel, the second mounting members and the fastening members being hingedly interconnected by double pivot hinges which permit the panel to move in a direction within its main plane normal to the free edges of the fastening members secured to the inside of the panel, whereby, when assembled and fitted, the panel can be moved between a first position where the panel can be swung open and closed and a second position where the closed panel is prevented from being swung open by interengagement of said free edges and the panel carrying locking means operable from outside the panel for retaining the panel in the second position against unauthorised entry.
Such a construction can be made such that gaps are absent, since what appears from the outside of the building is a single panel. Furthermore, the structure of the present invention can be less expensive than known structures without losing the security of the system.
The fastening members and the second mounting members can have any suitable structure but preferably each of them are elongate members presenting parallel elongate edges.
While the panel can be a plain panel, for cheapness of construction while preserving a considerable strength, advantageously the panel includes a shallow periphery extending side wall having an inwardly turned rim.
The elongate fastening members may then be fastened to the panel within the confines of two opposite ones of the side walls.
The elongate fastening members and the second mounting members are preferably each in the form of a channel section member having an outturned rim extending from one of the flanges, the outturned rims presenting said parallel elongate edges.
The double pivot hinges may include a lost motion connection allowing the panel to move between said first position and said second position, the lost motion connection including resilient means urging the panel towards the first position.
In order to ensure that the free edges of the fastening members and the second mounting members interengage accurately, an abutment arrangement is preferably associated with the panel and the second mounting members so that when the panel is swung to its closed position, said free edges are located whereby the fastening members interengage behind said second locking members. The abutment arrangement may include a keeper plate for said locking means mounted on said second mounting member in any suitable manner.
In order that the present invention may more readily be understood, the following description is given, merely by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a security door assembly; Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the hinging arrangement in the assembly of Figure 1 but in open condition; Figure 3 is the same as Figure 2 but in closed condition; Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the locking arrangement in the assembly of Figure 1 but in open condition; Figure 5 is the same as Figure 4 but in the closed condition; Figure 6 shows in isometric view the fitted lock in Figures 4 and 5; Figure 7 shows in isometric view brackets incorporated in the door panel prior to fitting the lock in Figure 6;; Figure 8 is a fragmentary sectional view showing a modified locking arrangement but in open condition; Figure 9 is the same as Figure 5 but in closed condition; Figure 10 shows in isometric view the fitted lock in Figures 8 and 9; and Figure 11 shows in isometric view brackets incorporated in the door panel prior to fitting the lock in Figure 10.
Referring to Figures 1 to 7, a security door assembly comprises a panel 1 having peripherally extending side wall 2 having an inwardly-turned rim 3. Upper and lower substantially parallel elongate channel members 4 are welded to the inner face of the panel 1 and each presents two downwardly facing free edges 5. Mounting means comprise two pairs of parallel elongate channel members 6 and 7 provided with apertures 8 along their lengths. These are interconnected by elongate connector means in the form of long bolts 9 passing through selected apertures.
The channel members 6 are of similar length to the members 4 and also of similar section but inverted so that they each present two upwardly facing free edges 10.
Corresponding ends of the channel members 4 and 6 have vertically aligned apertures slidably receiving legs 11 of cranked bails 12 forming double-pivot hinges between the panel 1 and the mounting means. Coil springs 13 are provided on the bails 12 to bias the panel 1 upwards.
Centrally of the upper channel member 4 there is mounted a lock 14 having a bolt 15 operable by a key 16 insertable from the outside through a key hole in panel 1. The bolt 15 of the lock 14 is co-operable with a mortice plate 17 fixed in the upper channel member 6. Brackets 18 are included in the upper channel member 4 for mounting the lock 14.
When installing the security door assembly, the channel members 6 are closed to the members 4 and moved upwards so that the free edges 5 and 10 interengage with each other. The members 6 are thus within the side wall 2 and flush with the rim 3. In this condition, the panel 1 is placed over the outside of an entrance of a building and then the members 7 are applied from inside the building and the bolts 9 tightened so that the entrance surround is clamped between the channel members 6 and 7.
The panel 1 can then be lifted with the help of the springs 13 to free the edges from the edges 10 whereupon the panel 1 can be hinged open lifting the panel 1. The panel 1 can then be secured from the outside by swinging the panel 1 closed lowering it so that the edges 5 again interengage with the edges 10, and then operating the lock 14.
Referring to Figures 8 to 11, the lock 14 can be replaced by a lock 19 having a bolt 20 which can project upwards to engage an abutment bracket 21 welded to the member 6. Brackets 22 are welded in the upper channel member 4 for mounting the lock 19. In a modified arrangement the bolt 20 may abut the wall 23 of the member 6.

Claims (10)

1. A security door assembly comprising a panel having inner and outer sides, at least two fastening members fastened to extend from the inner side of the panel, the fastening members presenting free edges facing in the same direction and mounting means comprising at least two first mounting members and at least two second mounting members, the second mounting members each being so interconnected to a first mounting member that an entrance surround of a building can be clamped between the first and second mounting members, the second mounting members having a free edge which can interengage with that of an associated fastening member secured to the inside of the panel, the second mounting members and the fastening members being hingedly interconnected by double pivot hinges which permit the panel to move in a direction within its main plane normal to the free edges of the fastening members secured to the inside of the panel, whereby, when assembled and fitted, the panel can be moved between a first position where the panel can be swung open and closed and a second position where the closed panel is prevented from being swung open by said interengagement of said free edges and the panel carrying locking means operable from outside the panel for retaining the panel in the second position against unauthorised entry.
2. An assembly according to claim 1, wherein said fastening members are elongate fastening members presenting parallel elongate edges.
3. An assembly according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said panel has a shallow peripherally extending side wall having an inwardly turned rim.
4. An assembly according to claim 3, when appendant on claim 2, wherein said elongate fastening members are each fastened to said panel within the confines of two opposite ones of said side walls.
5. An assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein said second mounting members are elongate mounting members presenting parallel elongate edges.
6. An assembly according to claim 5, when appendant on claim 2, wherein said elongate fastening members and said second mounting members are each in the form of channel section members having an out-turned rim extending from one of the flanges, the out-turned rims presenting said parallel elongate edges.
7. An assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein said double pivot hinges include a lost motion connection allowing said panel to be moved between said first position and said second position, said lost motion connection including resilient means urging said panel towards said first position.
8. An assembly according to any preceding claim, and including an abutment arrangement associated with said panel and said second mounting members so that when said panel is swung to its closed position said free edges are located whereby said fastening members interengage behind said second locking members.
9. An assembly according to claim 7, wherein said abutment arrangement includes a keeper plate for said locking means mounted on said second mounting member.
10. A security door assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in'the accompanying drawings.
