Abstract
A profile for the construction of a door, window or the like. In the prior art it is necessary to use a different profile for each different size of associated component (e.g. lock face plate) to be used with the profile. The present invention provides a profile which permits the use of at least two different sizes of associated component by means of a stepped groove (20); i.e. the euro-groove is stepped so that the profile can be fitted with two different sizes of locking gear. A door, window or the like constructed from a number of sections of the profile can be provided with an outer frame (10) such that when the door, window or the like is closed with respect to the outer frame (10), the inner face 24 of the door, window or the like is flush with the inner face of the outer frame (10). <IMAGE>
Description
DOORS
This invention relates to doors, windows and the like and to components therefor.
It is standard practice to provide modern doors constructed of plastics material, usually with internal metal reinforcement.
The plastics components are usually extrusions, and contain. various grooves and passages to accommodate reinforcements, sealing strips, glass, locking gear and the like.
With the prior art profiles, it is necessary to use different, appropriately sized, profiles with different sizes of associated component.
According to the invention, a profile -is provided for the construction of a door, window or the like, the profile having at least one stepped groove such that the profile is capable of being matched to an associated component which can be selected from at least two different sizes of the component.
The stepped groove may for example have a first portion capable of receiving one width of lock face plate and a second portion capable of receiving a narrower width of lock face place.
The second portion may be seated deeper in the profile than the first portion.
Preferably, the groove is located centrally on an outer face of the profile.
The invention includes a door, window or the like, constructed from profiles according to the invention.
The door, window or the like may be provided with an outer frame, such that when the door, window or the like is closed with respect to the frame, the inner face of the door, window or the like is flush with the inner face of the outer frame.
By way of example, a specific embodiment of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which :
Figure 1 is a view from inside a building of a door and door frame according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-section on line A-A of Figure 2;
Figure 3 is a cross-section on line B-B of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a cross-section through a groove of a profile according to the invention, demonstrating its versatility.
The door shown in Figure 1 comprises a fixed outer door frame 10 and an openable door unit comprising a glazing panel 11 surrounded by a vent frame 12.
As best seen in Figure 2, the outer frame 10 defines a door opening into which the door unit can close, there being a projecting flange 13 against which the door abuts in the closed position.
The vent frame 12 is constructed from four profiles of plastics material which are welded together at mitred corners 14 (see Figure 1).
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, it can be seen that each profile has various grooves and passages therein. For example there is a large passage 15 to receive metal reinforcement 16. There is also a small channel 17 to receive a seal 18, and a large group 19 to accommodate the glazing panel 11.
However, the invention is principally concerned with a groove 20 on the peripheral face of each profile.
It is common practice to provide a groove on the peripheral face, for example to accommodate locking gear, and these grooves are commonly known as euro-grooves. In prior art profiles, the groove is matched to a particular size of associated component, such as the locking gear.
The groove 20 according to this embodiment of the invention has a stepped region 21 which enables the profile to be fitted to two different sizes of locking gear, making the profile much more versatile.
Figure 4, for example, shows how a face plate 22 for 16 mm locking gear can be fitted into an inner portion of the stepped recess 21. If however it is preferred to use 24 mm locking gear, then a face plate 23 for this locking gear can be fitted into an outer region of the stepped region 21.
Another important feature of the groove 20 is that it is located centrally on the outer face of the profile. This means that a door constructed from the profile is not "handed" which makes it possible to fit the door to different types of outer frame 10, while still ensuring that the inner face 24 of the door is flush with the inner face 25 of the outer frame.
Another advantage of the symmetrical periphery is that the seal 18, commonly referred to as the glazing bead, can always be positioned on the inside of a building, regardless of whether the door is to open inwardly or outwardly. This is important from the security aspect and from the aesthetic aspect.
The surfaces of the door and any facia panels can have any desired appearance, and may for example be arranged to create a timber effect.
All locks to BS 3261 can be fitted to doors according to the invention.
The vent frame or sash profile can be of PVC-U, while the outer frame may be of aluminium or a combination of aluminium and polyamide.
