A method of reinforcing a marginal edge portion of a polythene film or a polythene laminate film 10 so that it can be sewn for example without being unduly weakened, includes the step of heat sealing thereto, e.g. using a domestic iron 14, a supported polythene 12 (for example a woven polythene sheet with a polythene film on at least one side). The edging strip 12 may be doubled over and heat sealed to both sides of the film 10. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An improvement in or relating to the production of articles made from polythene film or polythene laminate film The invention relates to the production of articles made from polythene film or polythene laminate film and has for its object to provide an improvement therein.
The problem is that polythene film and polythene laminate film cannot be sewn without weakening the film along the line of stitching to such an extent that it can very easily be torn. Such films are, for example, Polythene film, Nylon/Polythene film, Polyester/Polythene film and Polypropylene/Polythene film. This problem has existed since such materials have come into general use.
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of producing an article from polythene film or from polythene laminate film, including the step of heat sealing along marginal portions a polythene film or a polythene laminate film which' cannot itself be successfully stitched to a supported polythene (for example a woven polythene sheet with a polythene film on at least one side). The supported polythene may be in the nature of a relatively narrow strip forming an edging material which can then be sewn.
According to a still further aspect of the invention, there is provided an article made from polythene film or from polythene laminate film by the method referred to above.
According to a still further aspect of the invention, there is provided a polythene film or a polythene laminate film heat sealed along marginal portions to a supported polythene (for example a woven polythene sheet with a polythene film on at least one side) for producing an article by the method referred to above.
In order that the invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a view of a polythene laminate film being provided with a supported polythene edging strip, Figure 2 is a similar view showing the edging strip subsequently being sewn to another sheet of material, and Figure 3 is a view showing a modification which has been found to improve the manner in which the laminate is provided with the supported polythene edging strip.
Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the sheet 10 there illustrated is a polythene laminate sheet such as Nylon/Polythene film.
Such a film, as is well known, cannot be satisfactorily sewn without weakening the film along the line of stitching to such an extent that it can very easily be torn. The strip of material 12 on the other hand is a so-called supported polythene, for example a woven polythene sheet with a polythene film on at least one side. Supported polythenes can be satisfactorily stitched because they do not tend to tear along the line of stitching.
The strip of material 12 is shown in Fig. 1 being heat sealed to the sheet 10. Purely for purposes of illustration the heat sealing is shown being carried out by the use of a domestic electric iron 14, but it will be understood that this can be effected by other means and when the invention is used commercially other heat sealing means will certainly be used. For example, commercially used heat sealers or high frequency welding equipment may be used.
In Fig. 2, the edging strip is shown to have been firmly secured to the marginal edge of the sheet 10 by heat sealing and the edging strip is being sewn to another sheet of material 16.
Referring now to Fig. 3, it has been found that the joint can be made very much stronger by effecting a double heat sealing of the edging strip to the polythene laminate film before the edging strip is sewn to the other sheet of material. In Fig. 3 the edging strip which has already been heat sealed to the polythene laminate film 10 is shown being folded over before being again heat sealed so that it is in effect heat sealed on both sides to the polythene film.
It has been found that by the use of the technique described above, polythene film and polythene laminate film such as Nylon/ Polythene film, Polyester/Polythene film and Polypropylene/Polythene film can be used for making all kinds of things normally produced by stitching. Of course, as well as being capable of being stitched, the supported polythene is also capable of taking different stresses, for example it can receive press stud fastenings, zip fastenings and the like.

Claims (5)

1. A method of producing an article from polythene film or from polythene laminate film, including the step of heat sealing along marginal portions a polythene film or a polythene laminate film which cannot itself be successfully stitched to a supported polythene (for example a woven polythene sheet with a polythene film on at least one side).
2. A method according to claim 1, in which the supported polythene is in the nature of a relatively narrow strip forming an edging material which can then be sewn.
3. An article made from polythene film or from polythene laminate film by the method claimed in either one of the preceding claims.
4. A polythene film or a polythene laminate film heat sealed along marginal portions to a supported polythene (for example a woven polythene sheet with a polythene film on at least one side) for producing an article by the method claimed in claim 1.
5. A polythene film or a polythene laminate film heat sealed along marginal portions to a supported polythene substantially, as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
