Ball bearings of the cup-and-cone type for wheel hubs have a slidable ball retaining member 7 movable with the cone 5 so that when the cone 5 is withdrawn the member 7 passes within the ring of balls 3 and keeps them in position. As shown, retaining members 7, pressed outwardly by a spring 9, are fitted at each end of the hub 1, and each member 7 has a flange 8 which makes contact either with the inner edge of the cup 2, or with an internal flange on the hub, to limit its outward movement.
