Abstract

Projectiles, fuzes.-Relates to projectiles which have a number of chambers containing propellent explosive charges successively exploded during flight to increase the range. According to the invention each propellent charge is fired by a mechanical device controlled by the next previous chamber. As shown, the projectile comprises an explosive head or bullet proper 1, Fig. 2. and a number of chambers 8, 2, 3, 4, 5 partly fitted one within another, and containing propellent charges 56. Each chamber contains a spring striker 25, Fig. 5, held cocked by a trigger 24 confined by the abutment of a pin 21 against the mouth of the preceding chamber until the explosion of the said previous chamber occurs. The striker then wedges the trigger out and strikes a percussion cap 27, igniting a composition 29, which transmits ignition to time fuzes 31 leading to primers in perforated thimbles 33. The pin 21 of the rearmost chamber is confined by a clamp 50 which is held in place during transport by the wall of the cartridge case, and while in the gun by the wall of the gun barrel. The foremost chamber 8 serves also to explode the bullet charge 54 through perforated plates 58, 16. A firing pin 10 is also provided in the nose of the bullet and acts by means of a cap 11 and detonators 13, 53 when a projecting part 9 strikes the target. In a modification, a sleeve screwed tc the bullet 1 extends backwards and encloses the propellent chambers except the rearmost one.
