Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for regulating the quantity of the glue application to a moving web, especially a corrugated pasteboard web
The invention relates to an apparatus for regulating the quantity of the glue application to a moving web, especially a corrugated pasteboard web, having a glue vessel, a rotating glue applicator roll which dips into the glue vessel and against which the moving web to be glued is pressed, and an adjustable doctor extending over the whole width of the roll for regulating the quantity of glue to be transferred to the web.
Glueing mechanisms consist essentially of the glue applicator roll and a glue-filled glue tank. The glue applicator roll dips into the glue and transfers it on to the moving web, for example the corrugation crests of the corrugated web of a corrugated pasteboard which rests on the glue applicator roll. In order to obtain a glue application film which is as thin and constant as possible, for glue quantity-regulation a scraper roll is known which forms a quantityregulating gap with the glue applicator roll and with which there co-operates a scraper. It is disadvantageous that the size of the glue gap cannot be adjusted constantly with sufficient precision. Such scraper rolls have defects in truth of rotation caused in manufacture which make themselves troublesomely noticeable especially when relatively small glue gaps are to be set. However small glue gaps are desired in order to bring as little moisture as possible on to the moving web, for which purpose then glues with a high proportion of solid substance are to be used. Moreover due to the wedge-shaped gap effect forces occur which press the glue applicator roll and scraper roll apart. This is a further source of defects for the desired small quantity-regulating gap to be set.
It is already known from Ger. Pub. Sp. 2508 119to use in place of a quantity-regulating roll a quantityregulating doctor which is placed obliquely of the surface of the glue applicator roll and extends over the whole length of the latter. It is disadvantageous that with such a quantity-regulating doctor alone it is not possible to set the desired very small regulating gaps, because the back pressure of the glue to be scraped off and the wedge-shaped gap effect are too great.
The invention is based upon the problem of improving the last-described apparatus for the regulation of quantity of the glue application to such effect that smaller glue gaps than hitherto can be used.
According to the invention there is provided an apparatus for regulating the quantity of the glue application to a moving web, comprising a glue vessel, a rotating glue applicator roll dipping into the glue vessel, against which roll the moving web to be glued is pressed, a pre-regulating adjustable doctor extending overthe whole width of the roll for regulating the quantity of the glue to be transferred to the web, and a further adjustable doctor for final regulation of the glue application.
The invention offers the advantage that as consequence of the smallersettable glueing gaps glues with high proportion of solid substance are usable so that the moisture transferred to the paper web becomes less. In the one solution the two effective regulating doctors also ensure that the glue film is uniform and has a constantsettable thickness. The pre-regulating doctor in this case takes over the coarse pre-regulation of the glue film, holding back the major part of the excess quantity of glue which is situated on the glue applicator roll. The final regulation doctor then subsequently takes over the fine regulation of the glue film. Defects in truth of rotation as in the use of regulating rolls are eliminated. Defects caused by inaccuracies in manufacture are considerably reduced. Moreover the defects caused by the wedge gap effect are also eliminated.
In the other solution it is essential that the regulating doctor stands approximately perpendicular to the surface of the glue applicator roll, so that no forces occur which would act in the radial direction and involve pressing away of this regulating doctor.
The invention will be described in greater detail below with reference to an example of embodiment illustrated in the drawing wherein:
Figure 1 shows a diagrammatic lateral elevation of a glueing mechanism for a web of corrugated pasteboard;
Figure 2 shows a lateral elevation of a detail of the glueing mechanism and
Figure 3 shows a diagrammatic front view of the glue applicator roll.
The apparatus for applying glue consists of the glue applicator roll 1, the glue tank 2 with the glue 3 contained therein and of a pre-regulating doctor 4 and a final regulating doctor 5 which extend over the whole length of the glue applicator roll and cooperate therewith. Both doctors 4, 5 are adjustable in relation to the surface of the applicator roll 1 by adjustment drive systems 6, 7. The glue gaps 8,9 are adjustable independently of one another.
A corrugated pasteboard web 10 having a cover coating on one side is fed to a roll 11 and partially loops around it. The applicator roll 1 dipping into the glue 3 transfers the glue on to the corrugation crests 12 of the corrugated pasteboard web 10 which rests on the roll 11.
In the amended form of embodiment according to
Figure 2 the doctors 4, 5 are firmly connected by means of a bar 13with a tube 14. Thetube 14 is mounted for pivoting about its longitudinal axis. The tube 14 can be pivoted in the indicated arrow direction for example by an adjusting drive system 15through a spindle 16. By pivoting ofthetube 14 the glue gaps 8, 9 of the doctors 4,5 can be adjusted initially in common. For more precise setting of the glue gap 9 of the doctor 5 an additional fine adjustability is provided for this doctor. For this purpose the doctor 5 is connected with the bar 13 by means of adjusting screws 17 and adjusting nuts 17'.
Thus the doctor 5 is finely adjustable perpendicularly of the surface of the glue applicator roll 1. By pivoting of the tube 14 it is possible for the doctors 4, 5 to be lifted quickly away from the applicator roll 1 in common.
The pre-regulating doctor 4 extends obliquely and almost tangentially to the surface of the applicator roll 1. It is connected with the bar 13 and an attachment 19 of the tube 14 by means of screws 18.
The pre-regulating doctor 4 has the task of holding backthe major part of the excess quantity of glue which adheres to the surface of the glue applicator roll 1. Thus it relieves the load upon the final regulating doctor 5, upon which therefore there acts only a slight pressure build-up of the glue. The doctor 4 also holds back dirt particles and glue lumps. For these reasons the glue gap 9 between the fine regulating doctor 5 and the applicator roll 1 is maintained very precisely during operation.
The pre-regulating doctor 4 arranged obliquely of the roll surface effects a smoothing of the glue film 16. This oblique position of the doctor 4 is not absolutely necessary. The doctor 4 can be arranged perpendicularly of the roll surface, just like the doctor 5.
In order to eliminate the susceptibility to dirt of this scraper device the surface of the glue applicator roll 1 is given a dirt-cleaning profile. For this purpose an oblique fluting 20 according to Figure 3 is advisable above all. Due to the fact that the grooves 21 extend in helical form around the glue applicator roll, dirt particles are conveyed in the direction of the one edge of the roll so that constant self-cleaning of the surface of the roll is guaranteed. Furthermore such an oblique fluting 20 can be manufactured more precisely than detent profiles usual hitherto.
