Abstract

A coating apparatus comprises a container (1) for liquid coating material (3), first and second rollers (9, 21) and a doctor blade assembly (13). The first roller (9) is positioned to extend into liquid coating material (3) in the container (1) such that, on rotation of the roller (9), the external surface of the roller becomes coated with the coating material. The second roller (21) is positioned to urge a sheet (19) of material to be coated with the coating material against the first roller (9) so as to transfer the coating material from the first roller to the sheet. The doctor blade assembly (13) is adapted to control the thickness of the coating material on the external surface of the first roller (9) prior to the coating material being transferred to the sheet material (19). In this respect, the doctor blade assembly (13) includes means (17) for moving the blade towards and away from the external surface of the first roller (9) so as to be able to leave regions of the external surface of the first roller free of the coating material.

Description

2350806 COATING APPARATUS This invention relates to coating apparatus for
applying an intermittent coating to a sheet material.
The application of intermittent coatings to sheet material gives rise to numerous problems. It is necessary to regulate the thickness of the coating and to regulate the length of the coated and uncoated regions. Particularly when applying a liquid coating to the sheet material it is difficult to regulate the length of the coated and uncoated regions and this is often accomplished by constructing a roller adapted to apply coating material to specific regions only of the sheet material. The disadvantage here is that it is necessary to provide a separate roller for each set of dimensions for the coated and uncoated regions.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a coating apparatus which overcomes or ameliorates this disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided a coating apparatus comprising:
a container for liquid coating material; a first roller positioned to extend into liquid coating material in the container such that, on rotation of the roller, the external surface of the roller becomes coated with the coating material; a second roller positioned to urge a sheet of material to be coated with the coating material against the first roller so as to transfer the coating material from the first roller to the sheet; and a doctor blade assembly adapted to control the thickness of the coating material on the external surface of the first roller prior to the coating material being transferred to the sheet material, the doctor blade assembly including means for moving the blade towards and away from the external surface of the first roller so as to be able to leave regions of the external surface of the first roller free of the coating material.
Thus the sheet material can be provided with an intermittent coating the dimensions of which are not dependent on the configuration of the first roller.
The container may comprise a tray. The container may incorporate level control means for maintaining the level of liquid coating material in the container substantially constant. The level control means may comprise an outlet opening at a predetermined level within the container.
The first roller may be heated, for example to maintain the viscosity of the liquid coating material at a suitable level.
The second roller may be made of, or may be provided with an outer layer of, a resilient material such as rubber. The doctor blade assembly may be operable to form on the external surface of the first roller a coated region of a 10 first predetermined length followed by an uncoated region of a second predetermined length. The first and/or second predetermined lengths may be adjustable. For a better understanding of the present invention and to 15 show more clearly how it may be carried into effect reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying figure which is a side view of one embodiment of a coating apparatus according to the present invention. 20 The coating apparatus shown in the figure comprises a tray 1 for containing a liquid coating material 3. The tray 1 is provided with an inlet 5 extending through the base of the tray and with an outlet 7 also extending through the base of the tray. The outlet 7 is at a higher level than 25 the inlet 5 to allow excess coating material to overflow into the outlet and away from the tray. In this way the level of coating material is maintained constant and the coating material is allowed to circulate which can be important where the coating material is solid at room temperature, such as bitumen, and requires to be heated in order to reduce its viscosity to an acceptable level for coating purposes.
A metal roller 9 is arranged such that the lower part of the roller extends into the coating material 3 in the tray 1. As the roller 9 rotates (anticlockwise as illustrated in the figure) a layer of coating material is formed around the periphery of the roller.
For those situations where the coating material is solid at room temperature the roller may be heated, for example by means of oil contained within the roller. Hot oil may be passed into and out of the roller 9 along the axis of rotation thereof, or the oil within the roller may be heated electrically.
The thickness of the coating material on the external surface of the roller 9 is regulated by a doctor blade arrangement 11. The doctor blade arrangement 11 comprises a doctor blade 13 mounted on a carrier 15 so as to be at a predetermined angle relative to the external surface of the roller, such as perpendicular thereto. The carrier 15 is mounted on an actuating mechanism 17 for moving the doctor blade towards and away from the roller 9. Thus, the doctor blade 13 serves to determine the thickness of the coating and to remove any solid accretions of coating material which may form in the tray 1.
Furthermore the doctor blade 13 is movable by the actuating mechanism into a position in which it contacts the roller 9 so as to reduce the thickness of the coating material to zero. Thus the actuating mechanism can be controlled, for example by way of a counter mechanism linked to the roller (for example a shaft encoder may be mounted on the roller 9 or on a motor (not shown) which drives the roller 9), to form on the external surface of the roller 9 a coating of a first predetermined length (say 250 to 300 mm) followed by an uncoated gap of a second predetermined 1 ength (say 25 to 30 mm). It should be noted, however, that the actuating mechanism can be adjustable to select any suitable first predetermined length for the coating and any suitable second predetermined length for the gap. Moreover, the first and second predetermined lengths are independent of the dimensions of the roller 9.
A sheet material 19 to be coated with the coating material from an unwinding roller (not shown) to a winding roller (also not shown), although the roller arrangement can be modified according to need. The sheet material 19 may be a sheet of flexible plastics material such as polyethylene.
The sheet material 19 is urged into contact with the external surface of the roller 9 by means of a lay-on roller 21 which may be made of, or provided with an outer layer of, a resilient material such as rubber. The coating material on the outer surface of the roller 9 is transferred to the sheet material 19 so as to form a sequence of coated regions interspersed with uncoated regions. The uncoated regions allow the sheet material to be cut into sections and bonded (either to itself to form a cylinder or to another component) which would not be possible with a continuous coating.
Where the coating material is solid at room temperature, the material will solidify after application to the sheet material 19 but, because the coating material is in a relatively thin layer, will generally retain a degree of flexibility.
The width of the sheet material 19 need not correspond to the length of the roller 9. In cases where the width of the sheet material is greater than the length of the roller 9, an uncoated strip can be provided along one or both edges of the sheet material to permit bonding of the sheet material along one or both edges thereof.
