Abstract

203,387. Bishop, J. A. June 6, 1922. Vaporizing-apparatus; oil supply.- Oil after being preliminarily heated is gasified in a retort surrounded by a casing containing heated aeriform fluid and is then conveyed through a pipe to the burner. In the apparatus shown, the heater 1 for preliminarily heating the oil in relatively small quantities comprises two compartments 1<a>, 1<b> separated by a partition 2 and containing steam coils 12, 12<a>. The oil admitted through a pipe 3 is fed by a pump 25 to a separator 20 fitted with a filter or strainer 26 through which the lighter oils pass. The filtered oil is conveyed by a valve-controlled pipe 30 and a pipe 31 to a retort 40 containing a filling material 44 such as small metal rods, fragments, tubes &c. and arranged in a casing 50 which is connected by a valve-controlled pipe 51 to the steam main 52 of a boiler 60. A drum 41 arranged within the retort 40 is connected by pipes 42, 43 to the steam space in the casing 50. The oil is gasified in the retort 41 and passes through a pipe 61 at the lower end of the retort to the burner 62. At starting steam from an auxiliary boiler 11 supplying steam to the heater 1 is supplied through a pipe 65 to the main 52 and passes through a valve-controlled pipe 54 and the pipe 31 into the retort 40. The steam breaks up the oil in the retort 40 and forces it to the burner in a partly atomized and partly gasified state. When steam is developed in the boiler 60 it is admitted through the pipe 51 to the casing 50 and the steam from the auxiliary boiler is cut off. Filling material 61<a> such as wire, small tubes &c. may be arranged in the pipe 61 in such a position as to be heated by the burner 62 thereby ensuring complete gasification of the fuel. The separator 20, casing 50, heater 1 may be covered with heat insulating material and are provided with sediment &c. removing pipes 27, 63, 10. Carbon may be removed from the retort 40 by blowing steam through the pipes 54. 31. A bye-pass pipe 70 is connected to the fuel supply pipe 21 leading to the separator 20 in order to lead excess oil back to the heater 1.
