Abstract

A bracket 10 for a breakaway cable 20 for a trailer, the bracket being mounted between the towing vehicle 14 and the ball 12 of a trailer hitch. This arrangement replaces the present practice of securing a breakaway cable to the ball of the trailer hitch whereby the cable can be damaged and will not retain the trailer if the ball should be sheered-off. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Breakaway cable bracket This invention relates to breakaway cables for towed vehicles such as trailers.
It is known to provide a breakaway cable on trailers, the function of which is to act on failure of the trailer coupling either to brake the trailer or, if the trailer has no brakes, to keep the trailer connected to the towing vehicle for a sufficient time to bring towing vehicle and trailer to rest. The normal practice is to connect one end of the breakaway cable to the trailer and to pass a loop of the cable over the ball of the towing hitch on the towing vehicle. This practice has the following disadvan tages:- Grease from the ball will smear all over the cable; The coupling sometimes traps the cable and cable strands can be damaged; When a "Flipper Type Ball Cover" is fitted the cable can become trapped in this cover; and If the ball should sheer or come off then the cable will come away with the ball.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of these disadvantages and provides a bracket for attachement of a breakaway cable to a towing vehicle, said bracket being located between the ball of a towing and the towing vehicle and being secured in place by means also securing the said ball to the towing vehicle.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is an exploded view of a breakaway cable and attachement therefor.
Referring to the drawing a bracket 10 is formed with apertures through which bolts (not shown) pass in order to secure a ball 12 of a towing hitch to a vehicle towing bracket 14. The bracket includes a lug 16 at one side there being an aperture 18 in the lug to which one end a breakaway cable 20 is attachable.
The invention is not confined to the above described embodiment and many variations thereof can be made.
1. A bracket for attachement for a breakaway cable to a towing vehicle, said bracket being located between the ball of a towing hitch and the towing vehicle and being secured in place by means also securing the said ball to the towing vehicle.
2. A bracket as claimed in Claim 1, which includes a lug having an aperture therein to which the breakaway cable is attachable.
3. A bracket substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
4. Avehicle including a bracket as claimed in any preceding claim.
