Abstract

An apparatus for profiling rod or wire comprises two pairs of driven profiling rollers (17) arranged normally one to the other, the rollers of each pair being spaced to engage the material at opposite sides thereof. The rollers (17) can be skewed at an angle ( alpha ) to the direction of travel of the material (22) to be profiled so as to produce in one operation a profiled rod or wire twisted along its longitudinal axis. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for Ihe profiling of rods particularly of wire material The present invention relates to an apparatus for the profiling of rods, particularly of wire material, which possesses two pairs of profiling rollers respectively arranged oppositely disposed and driven in opposite sense. Both the roller pairs are arranged at right angles one to the other and the profiling rollers receive between them the rod or wire material to be profiled in one rolling operation.
An apparatus of similar kind is described in DE-AS 2 242 760, which possesses two roller pairs, arranged at right angles to each other, each of two respective mutually corresponding rollers driven in opposite sense. Howevar, a roll stand for the hot rolling of metal wire is concerned in that case.
An apparatus for the profiling of rod material is known from DE-OS 2 325 611 in which the rod material is guided between four profiling rollers arranged at right angles to one another and is deformed by the rolling surfaces thereof from its original round cross-section to square crosssection. This known apparatus serves for the profiling of armoured steel rods which in case of need are twisted around their longitudinal axis after the rolling in an additional operating step.
According to the present invention there is provided an apparatus for profiling wire or rod material comprising two pairs of profiling rollers arranged normally one to the other, the rollers of each pair being spaced to engage the wire or rod material therebetween, and drive means to rotate the rollers of each pair in opposite sense, each of the profiling rollers being settable with its plane of rotation at an angle to the direction of travel of the material to be profiled.
Preferably said angle is equal for each roller.
An embodiment of the invention will now be more particularly described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows an apparatus embodying the invention in a plan view with the drive of a coiling drum for the profiled material and the drive, synchronised therewith, of profiling rollers, Fig. 2 shows the apparatus seen in Fig. 1 in a lateral view, Fig. 3 shows in an enlarged plan view the profiling rollers, and Fig. 4 shows in a cross-sectional view, the profiling rollers with a wire received between their profiling surfaces.
Referring nbw to the drawings, a frame 1 carries a drive motor 2, on the axle 3 of which a belt pulley 4 is arranged rotationally and axially fast. By means of a belt drive 5. the motor 2 stands in driving connection through a further belt pulley 6, which is received rotationally and axially fast on an axle 7 of a gear 8, with the gear 8.
Disposed on an output shaft 9 of this gear is a drum 10 for coiling the profiled material and a belt pulley 11, which stands in driving connection through a belt drive 1 2 with a further belt pulley 13. This belt pulley 13 is on the shaft 14 of a spur wheel gear designated in its entirety by 1 5. This spur wheel gear comprises a spur wheel 1 6, which is connected with the axles of four profiling rollers 1 7 by means of a set of suitable spur wheels (not illustrated). These profiling rollers at their outer periphery are provided with encircling profiling beads 18 of substantially rectangular crosssection. The profiling rollers are so arranged that they rotate by their profiling beads 1 8 in a housing 19, which is received on a mounting 20.
The wire material of round cross-section to be profiled is drawn off a reel 21 and fed by way of the spur wheel 1 6 to the profiling rollers 1 7. After the profiling by the co-operating profiling rollers, the profiled material runs onto the drum 10 where it is coiled up. The wire material is guided between the profiling rollers by means of the tension arising during the coiling up onto the drum 10.
The profiling rollers 17 and the drum 10 rotate synchronously because of the above mentioned driving connection between them. During the transit of the material to be profiled between the profiling rollers, the profiling beads 1 8 of the rollers act on the external surfaces of the cylindrical rod 22 to reshape the original circular cross-section. This is shown in Fig. 3, where the rod section reshaped to square cross-section after its transit between the profiling rollers is designated by 23.
The profiling rollers are so arranged that their planes of rotation can be set at certain angles to the direction of travel of the material to be profiled. In Fig. 3, such a setting of the plane of rotation of a profiling roller is indicated by a chaindotted line and designated by the angle a. With such a setting of the profiling rollers, the rod material 22 is simultaneously profiled to square cross-section and twisted along the longitudinal axis in a single operation.
1. An apparatus for profiling wire or rod material comprising two pairs of profiling rollers arranged normaily one to the other, the rollers of each pair being spaced to engage the wire or rod material therebetween, and drive means to rotate the rollers of each pair in opposite sense, each of the profiling rollers being settable with its plane of rotation at an angle to the direction of travel of the material to be profiled.
