Abstract
Withdrawal of a slidable bolt 10 from a sleeve 24 is prevented by inserting a barrel lock 20 axially into a bore 16 at one end of the bolt 10, or directly in the end of the sleeve, and locking it to the sleeve 24. Operation of the lock displaces opposed balls 22 into an internal groove 28 of the sleeve either through bores 18 in the bolt 20 or directly. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Locking Device
This invention relates to a locking device. In particular, it relates to a sliding-bolt type locking device.
A sliding bolt is a locking device which has a slidable bolt and conventionally is designed to be used with a padlock. The padlock is used for locking the bolt against sliding movement in order to effect a locking operation. A problem with conventional locking devices of this type is that the padlock is accessible and can be jimmied.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a sliding bolt type locking device which is less easy to jimmy than conventional sliding bolt devices.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a locking device comprises a bolt which is slidable in a sleeve secured to a fixing plate and a barrel lock which can be inserted into and locked on to the sleeve for locking the bolt against sliding movement.
The barrel lock may be removable and for this purpose, the bolt may have a recess at one end for receiving the locking member. A recess may be provided on the inside of the sleeve and the locking member may actuate a movable pin or other protrusion to enter the recess for locking the bolt in the sleeve.
The recess may extend circumferentially around the inside of the sleeve.
The movable pin or protrusion may be located on the locking member and an opening may be provided in the bolt to give the pin or protrusion access to the recess in the sleeve.
The locking device may be cylindrical and it may have two such pins or protrusions which are located in diametrically opposed relationship.
The locking member is preferably key operated.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a sliding bolt locking device comprising a backing plate adapted to be fixed to a door, post and the like; a sliding bolt; and means slidably securing the bolt to the backing plate, a bore being formed transversely through the sliding bolt for receiving the hook of a padlock to lock the bolt against sliding movement.
Preferably the transverse bore is formed at a position which is immediately adjacent a part of the securing means when the bolt is in its locking position, so that relative sliding movement of the bolt is substantially completely eliminated.
The bolt may be guided for longitudinal sliding movement in a sleeve. The sleeve may be in the form of a steel tube. Preferably, the bolt is also of steel.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a bolt of a locking device according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a side view, on an enlarged scale, of a locking member for the bolt of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a side view, on a reduced scale, of a sleeve of the bolt of Figure 1; the sleeve being mounted on a fixing plate;
Figure 4 is a plan view of a locking plate;
Figure 5 shows the locking device mounted on a door;
Figure 6 shows a variant of the locking device of the invention;
Figure 7 shows schematically another embodiment of the bolt of the invention; and
Figure 8 shows a padlock for the embodiment of Figure 7.
Referring to Figures 1 to 6 of the drawings, reference numeral 10, generally indicates a bolt having a shank 12 and a head 14. A cylindrical recess 1 6 is formed in the bolt 10 and the head 14. A pair of diametrically opposed openings 1 8 are formed transversely between the outside of the bolt 10 and recess 1 6.
A cylindrical locking member 20 or barrel lock having a key 21 is provided to fit the recess 16 in the bolt 10. The locking member 20 is key operated. A conventional lock (not shown) is housed in the locking member 20 which locks a pair of ball bearings 22 in a position in which they protrude from the external surface of the locking member 20.
The locking device further includes a sleeve 24, in the form of a metal tube which is welded to a fixing plate 26.
The sleeve 24 is formed internally with an annular recess 28 for receiving the bali bearings 22.
The fixing plate 26 has a pair of screwthreaded holes 30 for bolts, as well as holes 32 for screws.
A backing plate 34 and a locking plate 36 are also provided.
The locking plate 36 has a large hole 38 for receiving the shank end of the bolt 10 and smaller holes 40 for screws.
In Figure 5, the locking device is shown fixed to a door 42 by means of bolts 44 through the holes 30 and screws through the holes 32. The heads of the bolts 44 may be countersunk into the backing plate 34.
The locking plate 36 is fixed to a door post, indicated by reference numeral 46. A recess (not shown) is provided in the post 46 behind the hole 38 for receiving the end of the bolt 1 0. As shown in Figure 5 the bolt 10 is locked in the sleeve 24 of the locking member 20, thereby locking the door, without the use of a padlock.
Reference is now made to Figure 6, in which the same reference numbers as have been used previously are used for the same or similar parts.
In this variant the construction of the lock is essentially the same as that described previously in respect of the fixing and backing plates, the locking plate, the bolt 10. The device is used with a barrel lock of the same type as described previously and adapted to be received in the recess 1 6 in the head and one end of the bolt 10.
In this variant, however, the sleeve 24 is made up of two co-axial sleeves which are welded or otherwise secured to each other, there being an outer sleeve 48 and two aligned and spaced apart inner sleeves 50, 52 with the gap between the sleeves 50, 52 forming a recess for receiving the locking members of the barrel lock.
The invention is not limited to the precise constructional details shown in the drawings and described herein and may be varied while still falling within the scope of the invention as set out in the appended claims. For example, with reference to Figures 1 to 6 of the drawings the bolt may be of uniform diameter throughout its length and the barrel lock 20 may engage the sleeve 24; in this event some simple means for withdrawing the bolt may be provided, e.g. a magnet provided at the end of the barrel lock or a frangible pin connected to the bolt and passing through a thin slit in the sleeve 24 could be used for withdrawing the bolt from its locked position.
Referring to Figure 7, reference numeral 60 generally indicates a bolt of a sliding-bolt of the invention. The bolt 60 has a shank 62 and a head 64. A pair of spaced transverse bores 66 and 68 are provided through the bolt 60, the bore 66 being positioned in a portion of the bolt that is formed with an annular groove 67.
The bolt 60 fits into a sleeve 70 which is welded to a fixing plate 72. A locking plate 74 and a backing plate 76 are also provided. The fixing plate is secured to the backing plate by screws 88 and a bolt 80 also with a round head.
In operation the bolt 60 is pushed through a hole in the locking plate 74 and into the recess supporting the plate. In this position, the transverse bore 66 is located between the one end of the tubular member 70 and the locking plate 74 with a minimum clearance on either side.
The hook of a padlock (not shown) may now be inserted through the bore 66. The recess 67 accommodates a portion of the hook of a padlock so that clearances between the hook and the plate 72 and between the plate 72 and the bolt 62 are as small as possible so that a crowbar or other instrument cannot be inserted therebetween and used to jimmy the lock.
It is an advantage of the device described by way of example with reference to the drawings, that, as there is iittle clearance around the hook of the padlock, it leaves little manoeuvring space to force the lock. This fact combined with the rigidity of the locking device, renders the device
practically burglar-proof.
The second bore 68 may be used for supporting the padlock when the locking device is in the open position, or it may be used for locking a pair of double doors or generally locking the bolt
60 to any suitable projecting bracket. Figure 8 shows a suitable padlock 90 for the embodiment of Figure 7 comprising a case 92 with a sliding pin 94.
