Abstract
An igloo 10 is constructed of a number of gores 14, eight for example, made of an expanded plastics material e.g. polystyrene or polyurethane reinforced with skeletal stiffening members 17 e.g. of a steel mesh and assembled edgewise by mortise and tenon joints 15, 16 to be sealed by an appropriate cement. The igloo walls can embed water and electricity cable conduits and a wire gauze for supporting an external plaster layer can also be provided. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Expanded Plastics Material Igloo
This invention relates to an igloo which is constructed by inlay-coupling prefabricated elements obtained by shaping an expanded plastics material which contains embedded therein, a metallic reinforcing skeleton and all the pipings and ducts which are intended to be used for supplying water and electricity.
The igloo according to the invention can have, for example, a generally hemispherical form of an inside diameter of 6 metres and can be formed by 8 gores having, each, a base width, measured along the external circumference, of 2.435 metres, the gores being united; each to its next ones by a simple mortise and tenon type joint which is then properly cemented when the eight component pieces are all assembled together.
Each of the eight gores, having a constant end thickness of 11 centimetres, can be made, for example, of expanded polystyrene or polyurethane, in the internal mass of which there has been embedded during shaping, the latter operation being carried out in moulds, a lightweight metallic skeleton of mild steel so as to confer an improved robustness to the assembly.
The external surface is then finished with a double layer of a plastics putty having, incorporated therein a gauze, intended to anchor theplaster.f Such an article is lightweight (300 kilograms without the putty layer) and thus it is easy to ship and to assemble and does not require skilled workmanship.
In addition, the low weight does not require any special foundation since a thin concrete flat is sufficient.
Expanded polystyrene, with its low heat transfer coefficient (K=0.035 kilocalories per meter per hour and per OC of temperature differential) makes it possible to obtain a thermally insulated room space both in hot climates (seaside) and cold climates (hills, mountains). In both cases the expanded plastics material ensures the best living comfort.
In addition, inasmuch as no fixed structures are required; the base plafform being excepted, the igloo does not necessitate any special licence for its erection nor any authorization from the governmental engineer corps since it is assimilated to a normal camping tent.
A number of such igloos can be assembled together to provide an enlarged living space.
The structural and functional features of the invention and its advantages will be more clearly understood from a scrunity of the ensuing exemplary description referred to the diagrammatical accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view which illustrates an assembled igloo.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line Il-Il of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line Ill-Ill of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary front view showing
an igloo gore.
Figure 5 is a side view of the gore of Figure 4
and
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view taken along
the line VI--VI of Figure 4.
In figures from 1 to 3 inclusive of the drawings
there is shown an example of an igloo made
according to the teachings of this invention.
It is generally indicated at 10 and has a
substantially hemispherical outline, with an
entrance door 11 and windows such as 1 2 and
13.
The igloo shown herein is composed by eight
partially spherical element or gores 14, best seen
in Figures 4, 5 and 6, which are interconnected at
the edges by a mortise and tenon type joint. To
this purpose, as best seen in Figure 6, the two
vertical edges of each gore have, respectively, a
tenon portion 1 5 and a mortise portion 16 which
are adapted to match the corresponding portion
of an adjoining gore. The portions 1 5 and 16 can
be made of wood, iron or another material and
can directly be embedded in the expanded
plastics material as the element is being shaped,
as well as the metallic reinforcing skeleton 1 7 and
the servicing conduits (not shown).
During shaping, also the entrance openings
such as 11 and the window openings 12 and 13
are provided.
The building can be externally plastered by a
layer 18.
The advantages of the construction described
above can be summarized as follows.
It can be produced, in the first place, at an
extremely reduced firth cost by virtue of the
manufacturing methods by moulding of an
expanded plastics material.
It can be used both in torrid and glacial
climates due to the properties of insulation of the
expanded plastics material which is used.
It is extremely lightweight, adapted to be used
in areas where earthquakes are frequent and is
not combustible.
