Abstract

202,353. Thompson, R. Jan. 27, 1923. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Vehicle fittings; handling transferable bodies. -A container 4 mounted on casters or runners is transferred between a lorry 1 and a railway truck or the like by means of a winch 6 at the forward end, the lorry being fitted with shock-absorbing buffers 9 to cushion the container, and the container being run over bridging means 5. In unloading the lorry, the cable 7 from the winch is passed under a pulley 8 which may be bolted as shown in Fig. 2 to the far side of the truck, the winch turning in the same direction for loading and unloading. Understays 3 are provided to support the vehicle when heavy loads are being handled. The winch may be operated by hand, or by the lorry engine. In the latter case the winch can only be driven when the gear-lever is in neutral position. The container may be stored temporarily on a platform 13, Fig. 3, having a bridge portion 14, winch 15, and hinged end frames 13<a> to hold the containers in place. A suitable form of ball-caster 23 for the containers is shown in Fig. 7.
