Abstract
An optical cable has dielectric optical waveguides contained in helical grooves 3 of a central filament 2, which has been formed by extruding plastics over a central stranded wire member 1, the grooves 3 following helical paths which may be of alternately opposite lay direction along the filament. The plastics of the filament 2 is extruded from a stationary die 9 through which the wire member 1 is drawn, the filament being engaged downstream of the die 9 and twisted in alternately opposite directions so that the grooves 3 formed by the die 9 are caused to follow helical paths where the plastics exits from the die 9. The extruded filament 2 may be twisted by blades 18 (or wheels) of a rotated sleeve 16, which engage in the grooves 3, or alternatively by means of wheels of resilient material which engage the surface of the filament 2. Dielectric optical waveguides are disposed in the grooves 3 and the whole is surrounded by an extruded plastics sheath to produce the optical cable. <IMAGE>
