Abstract

A method of making a flat or curved composite mirror comprises holding a thin glass plate 1 having a polished face 10 by suction on a matrix 4 of high flatness or specific curvature and then securing a thicker, substantially rigid, glass plate 6 having a ground face 9 to the plate 1 by an adhesive layer 5 which hardens without stress. The resulting mirror is removed from the matrix 4. The problem of both grinding and polishing the same element of a mirror is thereby avoided. As shown, the thin plate 1 has a reflective layer 2 and a protective quartz layer 3. The matrix 4 has suction channels 7. <IMAGE>
