Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable adjustment of light attenuation by inserting a light attenuator element using a thin metallic film into a support allowing free putting in and out. CONSTITUTION:A support 12 has a hole for putting in and out a light attenuator element in the center, and optical fibers 10, 11 are inserted and bonded at the center. Both end faces of the support 12 are polished and mirror finished to connect photo-connectors. The light attenuator element is made by polishing a glass plate 8 obliquely and evaporating a thin metallic film on the slanted face. It is interchangeable like a cartridge and some attenuator elements different in attenuation are provided. A light attenuator element having specified light attenuation is selected by measuring the amount of light attenuation inserting the light attenuator elements into the support 12 and introducing light. Then, the element is fixed by filling bonding agent 13.
