Abstract

A multicomponent filter 4, has layers 16 to 20 of air-permeable carrier material, eg fabric or fleece, which support distinct different air-treating masses 22 to 25 so that air conducted through the filter passes through each of such layers and passes sequentially through each of the distinct masses. The filter may be advantageously used in or over a fresh-air intake duct for a passenger compartment in a motor vehicle. The air-treating layers may comprise a moisture-adsorbing layer 22, eg. calcium aluminium silicate, optionally mixed with active carbon for adsorption of hydrocarbons and nitrous oxide, an acid gas-removal layer 23, eg calcium aluminium silicate soaked in alkali lye and enveloped in copper dust, a calcium chloride layer 24 for removal of nitrous oxides and sulphur dioxide, and a metal oxide catalyst layer 25 for oxidation of carbon monoxide. <IMAGE>
