Abstract
Certain nitrofuryl-vinylene compounds having the formula: <IMAGE> wherein R<1> and R<2> each independently represent hydrogen, (C1-C4) alkyl, (C1-C4) acyl, (C1-C4) alkoxycarbonyl, carboxyl, or (C1-C4) acyl wherein oxygen of the carbonyl group has been transformed into semicarbazone, thiosemicarbazone, amidinohydrazone, oxime or oxime-acetate, or R<1> and R<2> together with the carbon atoms to which they are bonded form a saturated or unsaturated five-membered or six-membered ring, and X represents oxygen or sulfur, or being an acid salt thereof when R<1> and/or R<2> represents amidinohydrazone, are provided for use in the treatment of cancers in mammals, particularly cancers of the digestive system and melanoma. The compounds may be administered in the form of a pharmaceutical composition including a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.
