Abstract

A method is described for producing a signal dependent on variations in the moisture content of air simply and without reference to hygrometric tables. The method consists of maintaining the dry bulb temperature of the air at a substantially constant value not below the dew point and measuring variations in the wet bulb temperature of the air by means of a wet bulb thermometer 14, e.g. a thermocouple. The constant dry bulb temperature may be maintained by an enclosed water bath 12 through which the air duct 8 passes. The evaporating surface of the thermocouple includes a microporous metal known as foam metal (U.K. Spec No. 1464302) which is also used in a guard ring 20 surrounding the thermometer. The ring and thermometer are intermittently flushed with water via valve 22, pipe 24 and nozzles 26. <IMAGE>
