Abstract

A crosshead journal bearing for reciprocating piston engines comprises a first bearing part 1 adjacent the piston rod 8, a second bearing part 2 rigidly connected to the first bearing part and disposed adjacent the connecting rod 28, and a journal 6 which is rotatable in the bearing and formed with an axial bore 13 for communication with a supply of lubricant under pressure, and with at least one cross-bore 16 which meets the axial bore and extends transversely thereof to the journal surface, the cross-bore being arranged to communicate, during at least some of the pivoting movement of the connecting rod in operation, with at least one flow path 17 extending to the bearing surface of the said second bearing part which is loaded in operation, said flow path starting from one part of the bearing surface which is less loaded in operation and extending to said loaded part. The result is that a film of lubricant can form in the bearing part near the connecting rod, the bearing can "breathe" between individual load cycles and the journal has its working life increased. <IMAGE>
