Abstract

A magnetically actuatable reed contact unit has two electrodes extending into an hermetically sealed enclosure to overlap at a contact region and at least one of the electrodes is provided with an enlarged end portion so as to increase magnetic mass at the contact region and thereby increase contact forces during actuation and in the closed position of the contacts. In this way the magnetic circuit of the contact unit can be constructed independently of the mechanical deflection system thus allowing the use of special magnetic materials for the contact element which do not have to have the required physical characteristics for glass to metal sealing. The elements of the contacts can be selected to fulfil a particular function of the switch such as magnetic holding when a hard magnetic material is used, high sensitivity when a highly permeable magnetic material is used, a soft iron for low remanence and a permanent magnet for normally closed contacts. <IMAGE>
