Abstract
A pyroelectric device (9) for detecting infrared rays (7) incident from several directions comprises a radiation- accepting surface (5) comprising a high polymeric film (4) of, for example, polyvinylidene fluoride, at least a part of said surface being curved. The device can be incorporated in a burglar or fire alarm, a traffic signal control or a control element for a process line. The surface may be cylindrical, conical, or dome-shaped and the infra-red rays may be directed on to it by a concave mirror, or a set of convex lenses. The device may be mounted in a metal-walled can provided with windows e.g. of germanium or silicon together with an impedance transducer consisting of a resistor and an FET. <IMAGE>
