Abstract

Tension-resistant electrical and optical cables are reinforced by fibres 2 of synthetic resin or glass on or in a carrier foil 1, the fibres or foil or both being bonded only at spaced intervals to a synthetic resin casing 13 thereby enhancing flexibility. The carrier foil may be of paper, polyester or polyethylene and have the fibres bonded on either side (Figures 1 & 2 not shown) or they may be sandwiched between foils (Figure 3 not shown) one of which may be a thermally insulating foam (6, Figure 4 not shown). The foil may not be bonded to the casing 13 but have gaps (7, Figures 5 and 7 not shown) through which fibres are bonded to the casing. Alternatively a separating foil 12 of paper or synthetic resin not bonded to the casing 13 is wound leaving gaps for bonding of the fibres to the casing. The cables are self-supporting and used in telecommunications. <IMAGE>
