Abstract
201,974. Metcalf, W. Miller-. April 10, 1922. Skates.-In roller skates of the type having two or more rollers in a single track, the frame comprises a rigid single-piece blank a of approximately the width of the footwear, having integral depending lateral members a<1> extending throughout its length and forming supports a<2> for the hubs of the, rollers b and, further, having laterally-extended supports c turned up from the members a'. The members a<1> may be pressed inwardly forward of the. front roller, to raise the portion a<4> to conform to the shape of the footwear. An integrally-formed heel support a<5> may be turned up from the frame a, and slots e, for securing-straps may be provided. When. three or more rollers are employed, the central ones are dropped in the frame, or are made of larger diameter than the end ones. The weight of the frame may be lessened by providing apertures f. Spacing-rods may be fitted between the side members a<1> for strengthening purposes and to allow of adjustment of the wheel spindles. According to the Provisional Specification, a spring-steel member having an axle attachment may be secured to the frame, and detachable pins may be provided to penetrate the footwear. A brake device may be secured to the frame. Rollers with treads of rubber, vulcanite, fibre, boxwood, &c., which may be detachable, are also described. One of the rollers may be arranged to swivel by means of slots and springs. The frame of the skate may also be formed of two portions of channel section, the side members of one part being turned outwards to overlap the side members of the other part, allowing for adjustment of the length of the skate.
