Abstract

Sheet material is treated successively with at least two liquids by supporting the sheet material 1 face upwards and advancing it horizontally through at least a first and a second treatment zone 5, 6. The The face of the sheet material is flooded with a first liquid in the first treatment zone and with a second liquid in the second treatment zone. At the downstream end of the first treatment zone a first textured resilient roll 11 removes from the face of the sheet all but a thin uniform layer of liquid and at the upstream end of the second treatment zone a second roll 13, preferably also resilient and textured, prevents the second treatment liquid flowing upstream. The sheet material is still wet where it encounters the second roll. The preferred roll texture is formed by a fine, close-pitch helical groove. <IMAGE>
