Abstract

The smoke signalling device is operated by the hydrostatic pressure of the water as the device travels from the submarine to the water surface. A system of pistons 3, 19, 23; cylinders 2, 16, 24 and springs 21 and 22 operate so that the high pressure prevailing on launching of the device cooks the activating mechanism, and when the pressure drops as the device nears the surface, one of the pistons 23 is drawn back against the pressure of spring 22 until the joint 14 separates whereupon the piston 23 becomes free and is shot forward by the spring 22. The spring strikes a percussion cap 26 which ignites smoke producing material 30. Smoke is produced, and when the pressure in chamber 31 rises to a certain level, a valve 35 opens to allow the smoke to issue. <IMAGE>
