Abstract
A shaft sealing assembly, and especially a ship's propeller shaft sealing assembly includes a sealing member and is constructed so that it is possible to apply varying pressures to the sealing member. As shown, a pressure chamber 5 surrounds a shaft 7 and houses an annular sealing member 9 urged into rubbing contact with a counterface 10 by springs 11 and by fluid pressure in the chamber 5. The chamber 5 has closable inlets 15, 16, 17 respectively communicating with a stern tube bearing oil chamber, with sea water surrounding the sealing assembly, and with an independent source of fluid pressure. <IMAGE>
