Abstract

The invention relates to pumps of the type in which liquid is drawn into and discharged from a pump chamber 35 through valves 36, 37 respectively by oscillating liquid in a pipe 25 connected to the chamber 35, the liquid being caused to oscillate by alternate vaporising and condensing of the liquid. As shown, liquid volume 19 is insulated from liquid volume 18 which is in contact with heated wall 12 whereby vapour is generated above both volumes and drives liquid out to cause pump discharge. The outflow of volume 18 is restricted by throttle 29 so that the inflow and outflow is less rapid than the flow of volume 19. When volume 18 is sufficiently reduced cooled wall 14 is exposed so that condensation takes place whereby liquid volume 19 refills and liquid enters the pump volume 18 then refills and the cycle repeats. The volumes 18, 19 may occupy separate chambers and a membrane may be disposed between the actuating liquid and the liquid in the pump chamber 35. <IMAGE>
