Abstract
A brazing method enabling a rapidly-oxidizing first metal (such as titanium, chromium or zirconium, or an alloy thereof) to be brazed using a second metal (such as aluminium, or an alloy thereof) at normal brazing temperatures and without the need of a flux, provides for the first metal to have its oxide layer removed, (for example by pickling followed by ion etching) and for a layer of oxide-preventing metal (e.g. copper, magnesium, zinc, germanium, silver or silicon, to be deposited thereon. In the brazing operation, the oxidation-preventing metal layer diffuses into the second metal to provide a strong ductive joint between the first and second metals. The brazing is preferably effected at about the eutectic temperature of the second and oxidation- preventing metals. The method can be applied to the brazing of two rapidly-oxidizing metals.
