Abstract

In a filter press (1) having communicating pressing chambers with a stack of plates (3, 4, 6) squeezable between a movable platen (9) and a fixed end plate (7), an initial sludge charging operation is followed by at least ten pressing operations in each of which there occurs further charging of the pressing chambers with smaller sludge amounts, the charging being initiated when the pressure in the chambers has fallen below a given lower value as a result of filtrate removal and the charging being stopped when the pressure has risen to a given upper value, this upper value being increased stepwise during the pressing operations to a maximum value. The limit value of the pressure in the initial charging operation is not more than 25% of the maximum upper value. The operation may be automatically controlled by a relay circuit controller 126.
