Abstract

201,679. Aldendorff, F. May 19, 1922. Electrostatic relays utilizing the attraction between a semiconductor such as agate and a contiguous piece of metal when a current is passed therethrough have the actuating part comprising the semi-conductor and metal mounted upon one side of a metal plate or support and the actuated part on the opposite side. A number of such parts may be arranged in rows on a long metal plate and made interchangeable. The connection between the actuating and actuated parts may be adjustable, and a lever arrangement may be used to give greater movement to the contact. On one side of a metal support 1 are arranged a layer of insulation, a layer of metal 5, the semi-conductor 6 and a metal spring actuating part 7, the parts 6, 7 being mutually attracted on passage of current which is passed through terminals 22, 23 connected to the parts 5, 7 respectively. Member 7 carries a pivoted member one arm of which is in the form of a spring 20 bearing against part 7, the other end carrying an adjustment screw connected through insulation 24 with the short arm of the actuated member 2 which is secured to the cross limb of an H-shaped spring support 8 which allows movement of member 2. The long arm of member 2 has a lateral extension 12 between contact springs 3, 4, moving away from the latter and contacting with the former when current passes. The upper ends of springs 3, 4 and the side portions of member 8 are held in a block, or between layers, of insulation 9, 10 fixed by screws 15. The movable spring of the actuating part may be straight and the semiconductor curved, or vice versa. The supporting plate with relays is mounted with the free faces of the semi-conductors directed downwards to keep them free from dust &c. According to the Provisional Specification the circuit closer of the actuated part may consist of two thin spring metal strips pressing against each other and engaging the fixed co-operating contact against which they rub like tweezers.
