Abstract

A method of separating an isotope or isotopic compound from a mixture comprising, after cooling the mixture, passing discrete portions of the cooled mixture through an irradiation zone (3) in which each discrete portion is irradiated by a plurality of pulses from laser devices so as to selectively excite one isotope or isotopic compound. An apparatus is also provided comprising a valve (4) and an adiabatic expansion nozzle (2) through which the mixture 46 passes. The valve (4) has a rotor (42) through which allows pulses of the mixture (46) to pass through the nozzle (2) to the irradiation zone (3). <IMAGE>
