Abstract

Isotopes, especially U235, are selectively ionised in two or more stages using two or more laser beams (46, 50, 58) produced by laser sources (36, 52, 60). In this arrangement, at least one laser source (36) is specifically tuned to excitation of a particular isotope. The particles ionised thereby can be separated by means of magnetohydrodynamic acceleration means (84, 86) from the product obtained and in enriched form be accumulated on a substrate. The last excitation stage is selected to be sufficiently small to be effected by infrared radiation. <IMAGE>
