Abstract

A vibratory plate compactor capable of reversing its direction of advance has a vibrator (2) with two contra- rotating unbalanced shafts (15, 19) one of which is adjustable in phase relative to the other, a drive engine or motor (4) coupled to one of the shafts (15) through a belt transmission (5) to drive the latter in one rotational direction, clutch means for coupling the said one unbalanced shaft to the other unbalanced shaft, and selector means (8) for selecting two different settings of the clutch means in which the said other shaft is coupled to the said one shaft in different relative angular positions to produce a resultant direction of vibration having a forward or a rearward component respectively, the clutch means including a unidirectional coupling which permits the said other shaft to over-run relative to the clutch means in one direction of rotation. <IMAGE>
