Abstract

In continuous steaming of woven and knitted fabrics (1) the steaming step is followed by a cooling step, these steps being effected whilst the fabric (1) passes around steaming and cooling cylinders (2,5) against which the fabric (1) is pressed by tensioned back cloths (3, 3a). To provide for enhanced fixing of the steaming effect an extremely low temperature cooland (8) (such as liquid nitrogen) is used to effect the cooling step. The back cloth (3a) and cooling cylinder (5) are such that the cooland (8) can pass therethrough from a cooling chamber (6) to fully penetrate the fabric (1), nozzles (9) directing the coolant in the opposite direction of movement of the fabric (1), Fig. 1. An insulating jacket (7) surrounds the cooling cylinder (5) and cooling space (6). In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the refrigerated coolant (8) is blown through nozzles (9a) in counter-current to an air stream created by a fan (11). <IMAGE>
