Abstract

A control apparatus for use with heat pumps, especially refrigeration systems to maintain a desired ambient temperature within an environment and a frost-free condition on an evaporator coil of the system. The control apparatus Figure 3 includes ambient temperature sensing circuits 160, 180 responsive to the temperature of a refrigerated chamber and evaporator coil respectively. The circuits 160, 180 each produce a "1" output when the chamber temperature is above a desired level and the evaporator coil temperature is below melting point level respectively. A frost sensor 150, which may be capacitive, produces a "0" output when frost build-up is excessive. A logic circuit 130 responds to these outputs to control relays 118, 120 whereby the defrosting means 116 and heat transferring cooling means 114 cannot be in an activated state at the same time. <IMAGE>
