Abstract

A hydrometer has a body 10 graduated to give the volume of a liquid e.g. water, within it. The sample is dropped in the liquid and volume change noted to give the sample's volume. A piston 14 with a graduated stem 13 may be placed in the body with its lower end immersed to a noted graduation 20 to give a fine volume reading on stem 13. Telescoping part 11 is fitted and adjusted so that when the whole is immersed in, e.g., water, a stem 12 alone protrudes and gives the sample's weight on a scale 17. To determine specific surface, the internal liquid is drained and the sample weighed as before. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 1), the parts 10, 11 are an integral body and closed by a cap. The volume may be varied by an extension fitted between the body and cap. <IMAGE>
