Abstract

A grab or tongs has two jaws (14, 16) pivotally connected together, two arms (28, 30) pivotally connected together and catches (60, 62) which can connect the first arm (28) to the first jaw (14) and the second arm (30) to the second jaw (16) so that the arms pull the jaws apart when the grab is raised so as to empty the grab. The empty grab can be lowered onto spoil, whereupon the arms move relatively to the jaws so as to release the catches. On raising the operating rope, the arms move relatively to the jaws. The first arm pushes the second jaw and the second arm pushes the first jaw so that the jaws close. <IMAGE>
