Abstract

Thermal isolation of a cryostat 1 is improved for a superconducting solenoid 50 having a plurality of separately energizable coils or winding sections by reducing the number n of conductors 129 required to selectively energize the p persistence switches each of which controls a particular winding section so that n<p. In one embodiment a diode is incorporated in series with a heating element of each switch. In another embodiment n(n -1)/2 coils are similarly controlled with n conductors using the time-current response of resistive persistence switches without diodes. Still another embodiment utilizes a binary to hexadecimal converter within the cryostat. Another persistence switch is disclosed which comprises a diode 12 and superconductive wire 16 in thermal contact with the diode. The heat evolved by current through the forward biased diode raises the temperature of the super- conductor above the transition temperature. <IMAGE>
