Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the loss due to the generation of a Joule heat and to obtain a Peltier cooler having little loss due to conduction by a method wherein a current is caused to flow through a contact point consisting of two kinds of high temperature superconductors, whose thermoelectric powers are different from each other, to perform a cooling due to a Peltier effect. CONSTITUTION:Two kinds of high-temperature superconductors 6 and 7, whose thermoelectric powers are different from each other, are Y-Ba-Cu-O and La- Ba-Cu-O oxide superconductors, for example. When a current is caused to flow in series in the superconductors 6 and 7, a heat-absorbing plate 5 is cooled by a Peltier effect. As the superconductors have no electric resistance, there is no loss due to the generation of a Joule heat and as their heat conductivity also becomes small in a superconducting state, the loss due to conduction can be reduced and a Peltier cooler having a good efficiency can be obtained.
