Abstract
Metals or alloys are rapidly quenched to obtain flakes or film in a metastable state ("splats"), such as one in which a minor constituent is in supersaturated solution or ultra-fine dispersion. The product is extruded at a low temperature, for example by wheel 4 through die 6, so that the product is still metastable (though not always in the same metastable state as before). The example relates to the extrusion of splat-cooled Al-2% Fe. <IMAGE>
