Abstract
PURPOSE: To purify the titled compound useful as a synthetic raw material of pharmaceuticals, etc., in high purity, suppressing the discoloration with time, economically, in an industrial scale, by adding a treating agent such as ammonium sulfite to dimethylethanolamine, heating and aging the mixture, and separating the dimethylethanolamine from the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Dimethylethanolamine can be purified by adding at least one treating agent selected from ammonium sulfite, ammonium persulfate, sodium bisulfite, aluminum chloride, ferric chloride, nickel nitrate, etc. to dimethylethanolamine in an amount of 0.1W2mol%, super-heating and aging the mixture (usually at 100W135°C), and separating the objective compound from the mixture. Since the impurities in dimethylethanolamine are converted to separable high-boiling compounds by reacting with the treating agent, the objective compound separated by distillation has high purity and exhibits extremely low discoloration with time.
