Abstract

An aircraft 10 which derives lift by reducing the pressure in one or more interior compartments 13 of the aircraft of a gas as dense or less dense than air by means of vacuum apparatus 14 to a pressure less than that of the air surrounding the aircraft. The density of the gas in the compartment may be further reduced by heating apparatus 20 and 21. The vacuum and heating apparatus can be provided by a gas turbine engine. The aircraft may be shaped as an aerofoil to generate lift from the airflow over the surfaces of the aircraft during forward flight. <IMAGE>
