201,435. British Mannesmann Tube Co., Ltd., Ross, D., and Smith, E. S. Sept. 4, 1922. Indicating leaks.-Relates to apparatus for testing joints in a pipe line, of the kind comprising two interconnected obturating members 4, 5 which are inserted through one end of the pipe line being tested, and arranged to enclose a space 15 containing the joint under test, a testing air pressure being then created in the space for this purpose. According to the invention, the obturating members are provided with circumferentially disposed tyre-like members 8, the inner tubes 9 of which are inflated to form air-tight joints with the walls of the pipes 1, 2. The inner sides of the outer covers 8 are preferably provided with flanges or lips 7. Air is pumped, when the apparatus is in the desired position, through the three-way cock 20, along a tube 12, to two flexible connections 11 leading to the tyrevalves 10. When the tyres 9 are inflated to the required pressure, shown by a gauge 23, the cock 20 is turned to communicate, through a tube 13 enclosing the tube 12, and an aperture 14 at its. end, with the space 15 being tested. Constancy of reading of the gauge 23 indicates that there is no leak in the apparatus itself, The desired test pressure is then applied, and any falling of the gauge reading 24, provided the apparatus is airtight, will indicate a leakage at the joint 3. After the testing pressure has been maintained for the desired period of time, the tubes 9 are deflated by opening the cock 20 to an exhaust connection 22, thus simultaneously releasing the pressure in the space 15. The tube 13 is graduated to facilitate positioning the apparatus in the pipe, and the tubes 12, 13 are rigid and composed of short connected lengths, the inner tube 12 being supported inside the outer tube 13 by perforated supports 16. The tubes 12, 13 may be curved to conform to the shape of the pipe and are provided with one or more spider-supports 18 for taking the weight.
