Abstract
1288033 Resuscitation and stomach cleansing apparatus T A D MICHAEL and E H LAMBERT 17 Oct 1969 [31 Oct 1968] 34209/68 Headings A5R and A5T Apparatus for use in resuscitation and/or washing out, dosing or voiding of, for example, the stomach comprises a tube 10 for insertion into the oesophogus, a radially expandible element 20 carried by the tube at a point displaced from its outer end, means for expanding said element for forming a seal with the oesophogus, and a duct, which may be the tube 10 itself, communicating between an inlet adjacent the outer tube end and a discharge port 16 located between said outer end and the element 20, the duct being closed off at a point between the discharge port and the inner end of tube 10. For resuscitation the duct comprises a part of tube 10 between a mouthpiece (13) Fig. 1 (not shown), attached via a coupling 12 to the outer tube end, around which is a mouth shield 14 and within which is a steel biter tube, and ports 16. Resuscitation air is supplied to mouthpiece (13) from a pump, which may be a bellows pump, or by exhalation of an operator. For stomach cleansing there is provided a tube 28 movable within a sheath 31, the external end of the tube 28 being connected to apparatus for supplying washing water or other dosing fluids, or to a pump for stomach evacuation. Both resuscitation via ports 16 and stomach cleansing via tube 28 may be effected simultaneously. The expandible element may comprise an inflatable tube 20 inflated either by resuscitation air, or, as shown, via a squeeze bulb 23, valve 24, inflatable pressure indicator bulb 25 and a tube 21. Alternatively the element comprises a resilient tube (35), Fig. 3 (not shown) connected between a fixed abutment (36) on the internal end of tube 10 and an abutment (37) moved, either electromechanically or mechanically, to expand the element by a wire (38) and returned by a spring (39). In a modification of the apparatus of Figure 2, the members 21-25 are omitted, the element 20 being expanded by the air supplied via ports 16 to the respiratory passages.
