Abstract
Steel is cast continuously in a mould with a wall 2 and electromagnetic coils 4 fitted on the wall for providing a moving field producing movement in the molten metal in the longitudinal direction 5 of the strand. The thickness S of the mould wall 2 is <IMAGE> wherein f is the frequency of the alternating current, gamma 1 is the electric conductivity and mu 1 is the permeability of the material of the wall 2, and the inside radius r0 of the wall 2 is <IMAGE> wherein gamma 2 is the conductivity and mu 2 is the permeability of the molten metal. The inside radius r0 is the shortest distance between the axis of symmetry and the wall 2. The downward flow at the mould wall may be enhanced by casting jets. By changing of phase of the coils 4, the direction of metal movement may be reversed. To induce turbulence, the coil phases may have unequal loads. For a rectangular mould, the coils may be on opposite mould sides. <IMAGE>
