Abstract

A device for sensing the tilt of cranes, i.e. when positioned on a slope, comprises a pendulum 58 attached to the crane superstructure used to give a direct slope reading or to automatically and appropriately alter the output of a hoist rope dynamometer or safe load indicator (both described). The pendulum can be mechanically connected to the safe load indicator or, in the embodiment shown, may be operably connected to a potentiometer VR4 to provide an electrical signal indicative of tilt. A device for detecting tilt in more than one plane is described, where the pendulum is mounted on a backplate which can rotate under gravity about a vertical axis (Fig. 7, not shown) so that it faces the line of steepest slope. <IMAGE>
