Abstract

A finned tube 1, Fig. 2, for heat exchangers is disclosed together with a process and an apparatus for making the tube. The tinned tube has Y-shaped fins 2 extending from the outer surface of the tube, the base 3 of the fins extending radially from the tube. The fins extend in a continuous uniform helical fashion along the tube outer surface. The finned tube 1 has been made from a smooth tube 1', Fig. 3, supported by a mandrel 10 using apparatus comprising rolling discs 8 (which form fins 2'), notching rollers 13 (which circumferentially notch the fins 2') and a bending roller 14 (which bends the fins into Y-shape). <IMAGE>
