Abstract

A photocrosslinkable composition comprises at least 50% by weight of (i) a synthetic polymeric binder containing active carbonyl groups and less than 50% by weight of (ii) a photoresponsive source of a compound which can crosslink the binder by reacting with the active carbonyl groups, that compound being ammonia or an amine. Preferably the photoresponsive source (ii) comprises a thermally stable reducible metal complex, especially a Co(III) complex but may be Pd(IV) complex, and may also comprise a compound to extend the spectral sensitivity and a compound to give amplification. A coating of the composition on the support can be exposed and developed with a solvent for the unexposed composition to give a resist image. Development may be preceded by heating. When the support is hydrophilic and the binder (i) is hydrophobic such an image can serve as a lithographic printing image.
