Abstract

The supply of material to an hydraulic press is controlled by sensitive detectors (22, 23) spaced along a transparent pipe (20) through which material is fed to the punch/counter-punch unit (1, 7 - 8). The sensors may be infrared detectors which detect reflectors from a metal wall 21 of the pipe, which wall is located opposite the detectors. The pressed unit when released operates a detector unit (27) which controls a discharge conveyor. The punch (1) and the counter-punch (7 - 8) are covered by resilient diaphragms (5, 12) backed by fluid under pressure. <IMAGE>
